Price wars in the airline industry regularly appear in the news, and competition among carriers is keen. Air fares change on a daily basis, sometimes more than once. But even with the constantly increasing costs of maintenance, inventory, and especially jet fuel, there are still cheap flights to be found. Air carriers do not have a fixed pricing structure, and differences in charges can be significant, even when departures and destinations are the same.

Whether traveling to Johannesburg or Georgia, today’s flier wants to arrive having made the smallest possible expenditure. Do not make the mistaken assumption that all airlines going to similar destinations will charge the same. When planning a trip, it has become absolutely necessary to do a little comparison shopping before making a ticket purchase. Don’t simply choose a destination, or visit an airline site on the Internet, and then pay whatever is currently listed. There are differences in prices which may astound you.

The main factor driving price reductions is competition. Every airline tries to out-bargain the next. When one company lowers fares, most of the time others carriers will also immediately do the same thing. Competition, however, is not the only factor in driving down the cost of flying. For example, some departures on weekdays may be less expensive, simply because more people travel on the weekend. In addition, air travel often is cheaper when travelling from one large metropolitan area to another, because more people are going to the same city, and the airlines will usually be guaranteed a full plane.

Where, then, can someone actually find a listing of these least expensive choices? Some people might assume that using one of the common web search engines will automatically present current pricing to any particular city. This seems logical, but can have its pitfalls. It is true that a standard search engine will compile information from individual air carriers, but it also will leave any rate comparisons to the buyer. This can be fascinating reading, but won’t necessarily help anyone find the best airfares, and doing this kind investigating will also very likely take a lot of time.

A much more efficient, useful way to find inexpensive trips is to log into one of the specialty Internet bargain-flight sites. These online businesses are travel-cost comparison experts. They are able to compile information from all the travel-booking search engines, and that information is instantly made available. It is constantly updated, and can be checked as many times as necessary at no charge.

Using one of these sites to find the cheapest way to get to your destination is easy. Most of them require a minimum of information to begin, usually just the departure and arrival cities, and the times and dates. Make one mouse click, and the serving carriers, current pricing, and all other pertinent information is there immediately. This means that all you really need to do is choose the options and pricing that best fits your plans. The latest and best statistics will enable anyone to seize a bargain as soon as it becomes available.

Planning a trip need not be a problem. In the future don’t hesitate to find the cheap flights on your own. Being able to see all the bargains in one location is a great advantage, and the extra money that might have been spent on a ticket can be spent on something a lot more enjoyable.

Alitalia Airlines After The Merger

Jun-29-2010 By Zelma Abasta

Headquartered in Rome, the eternal city, Alitalia is the nineteenth largest airline in the world, with its main hub at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. Alitalia serves 66 international and 24 domestic destinations, its top 12 flights all originating from Rome. Alitalia offers a frequent flier program MileMiglia, qualifying fliers for all the benefits of the Sky Team Alliance. Members of MileMiglia can earn miles on flights on Alitalia or any of its thirteen Sky Team partners, including Air France, Delta, Northwest, Aeroflot, Korean Airlines, Czech Airlines, and more.

The very first Alitalia flight took place just a year after the end of World War II, in’46, originating in Turin and arriving in Rome via Catania. The carrier’s first international flight was in’47, taking passengers from Milan to South America. Alitalia’s present fleet primarily consists of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, as the company makes strategic changes to expand its international presence after bankruptcy and merger.

Airlines seldom make money, and Alitalia is no exception to the rule. The carrier had only one profitable year,’98. When the Italian government stopped subsidies in 2006, flights were grounded, and the airline found it increasingly difficult to deal with labor issues. Alitalia declared bankruptcy in 2008, and then sold a 25 per cent stake to Air France-KLM.

The newly privatized Alitalia then merged with Air One under a corporate consortium called Compagnia Aerea Italiana (CAI), which finalized its acquisition of the two airlines in late 2008. The new Air One operates frequent flights to 36 destinations in Europe and also to North America, flying from Rome, Milan, and Turin.

Prime Minister Berlusconi had called for the formation of the consortium, which derives its investment capital from wealthy Italian entrepreneurs and banks. The consortium assumed Alitalia’s debts, which led to public questions as to how much the Alitalia sale was subsidized by taxpayers. The new company was formed with a capital of 1 billion euro, and promised a five-year plan to bring the new airline to profitability by 2010. Over 12,000 workers of the “old” Alitalia kept their jobs in the merger, but another 3,250 jobs were eliminated.

Alitalia officials anticipate that the 25 per cent minority stake held by Air France-KLM will help the new company to achieve its goals of profitability and expanded presence in the international market. The new partnership is a good deal for the flying public, as the chances to earn and spend frequent flier miles through MileMiglia are greatly expanded.

One well-known service of Alitalia has been continued by Air One. The airline continues to charter “Shepherd One,” the official airline for the Pope. Alitalia continues to provide charters for a well-known jet nicknamed “Shepherd One,” used by the Holy Father whenever he leaves the Vatican on flights around the world. The new consortium is expected to continue to provide Shepherd One.
