UK To Lyon
Not the most popular travel destination for vacations in France, Lyon is still a highly recommended, wonderful place to visit. UK travelers can find flights from London, Manchester, and Birmingham to Lyon year-round, although flights are more frequent during the ski season. There are charter flights from Paris, as well.
But since it is easier and less expensive to book a flight from the UK’s major airports to Paris, travelers really should look into charters if their final destination. Lyon’s principal airport is Saint-Eup?ry International. It has a smaller domestic airport, Lyon-Bron.
Lyon is widely regarded as the French “Second City.” It is, as the name suggest, France’s second largest city. Built at the confluence of the Rhone and Saone Rivers, close to the Alps, Lyon is a popular destination for skier. It is also the main area of commerce between Paris and Marseille, world headquarters for Interpol, and an industrial powerhouse, with pharmaceutical, chemical, and biotech companies. Lyon even has a large video game industry.
Lyon played a big role in World War II. The city was occupied by German forces and was home to the resistance movement. In fact, there is now a museum in Lyon dedicated to the resistance movement and its history. Many of the city?s homes had secret passageways that helped them escape German forces during raids.
Lyon is renowned for shopping, and sports wonderful architecture. It has one of the largest collections of Renaissance buildings in the whole of Europe. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lyon’s best known architectural masterpieces include the Place Bellacour, the La Mouche Cattle Market, the Cathedral of St. Jean, and the Church of St-Martin-de-Ainay.
Lyon is also home to many festivals, including the popular Festival of Lights celebrated on December 8 in honor of the Virgin Mary. Residents put candles in their windows, and the city organizes light shows onto the sides of important buildings and monuments.
Lyon, like the rest of France, is known for its food. Foodies seek out bouchons, a common kind of restaurant found in Lyon that only serves local food and wine. Bouchons are typical of Lyon.
A bouchon will typically serve coq au vin, andouilette, salad lyonnaise, cardoon au gratin, or marrons glac?s. Lyon is also known for tripe with onions and local sausages. No trip to Lyon is complete without sampling its wonderful cuisine. Nearby Lyon are the world-famous Beaujolais and Cotes du Rhones winemaking regions, making Lyon also a worthwhile vacation destination for lovers of fine wine.
