Information on UK Flights to Spain

Jun-10-2009 By Graham McKenzie

Spain has the second largest tourism industry in the world, and there’s no surprise really. Spain has long been a favourite for British holidaymakers in particular, and enthusiasm for this country never waivers.

Spain is so diverse, from the coasts, to the cities, to the villages and the mountains and getting where you want to go has never been easier. The major cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Alicante and Valencia amongst others, all have international airports and all receive flights from the UK. The national airline is Iberia, though all the major charter airlines and budget airlines fly here too. Ryanair, for example, have flights from the UK to 15 different Spanish airports.

Madrid is Spain’s capital and also the largest city. It is situated in the middle of the country, bordered by mountains. The main tourist attractions are located in its historical hub. You will get to see medieval architecture, churches, and cathedrals joint with a multinational combination of shops and an active nightlife.

Tourists seeking museums and the art museums must see Museo del Prado, as well as the National Archaeology Museum. The Palacio Real also known as Royal Palace is a gigantic and attractive structure, that shouldn’t be missed and also the Plaza Mayor, which is again an arresting square, in Madrid.

Madrid experiences a continental weather, which means that summers are warm and wet; whereas winters are cold with a possibility of snow.

Flights from the UK to Madrid land at Barajas International Airport which is about 15 -20 minutes from the city and is well connected.

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain, positioned on Mediterranean coast. It is a lively city, and is a sought after tourist destination, for years. The blend of historic and contemporary attracts many tourists. The main attractions are Ciutat Vella, the old town, and Eixample, which is the modernist area, popular for art nouveau architecture.

The weather experienced here is Mediterranean, therefore warm temperatures, throughout yea. It has hot and dry summers, and mild temperatures with rainfall throughout the winter.

To get to Barcelona, take a flight to the International Airport, also called El Prat, which is only nearly 6 miles away from the city.

Other popular city destinations include Valencia on the Mediterranean coast, where paella was invented; Alicante, to the south of Valencia; Bilbao, in the north; Cadiz, the oldest city in Western Europe; and Seville, where you’ll find the world’s third largest cathedral.

Spain is popular for numerous Mediterranean coastal resorts as well as miles of pristine and sandy beaches.

The Costa del Sol (meaning ’sun coast’) is the most prominent among these. The Costa del Sol is roughly 100 miles long and covers Malaga. To arrive to this area of the country, book a flight to the Malaga International Airport, which is served by numerous carriers, and thus has much competition for the route. You may get some cheap deal.

Further east in the province of Granada you can relax on some slightly less crowded beaches or go skiing in the Sierra Nevada in the winter! Flights from the UK are available directly to Granada Airport, or fly further east into Almeria Airport where direct flights from the UK are also available.

Almeria is one of the most unspoilt sections of coastline, where tourists can find some great beach resorts, national parks, mountains, and desert. It is a better option to Costa del Sol.

The southern as well as the eastern coastline enjoy a Mediterranean type of climate, therefore it a fine place to visit throughout the year, although mainly the summer months are better for a beach retreat.
