Many people worry about traveling with an infant, especially first-time parents. However, with a few simple considerations, it is possible to fly with a baby and actually have fun!

What’s the secret to getting the best flight with your infant? Organize, organize, organize. There are many styles of diaper bags which offer multiple compartments – lots of compartments can make it easier to find exactly what your baby needs in the confined space of an airplane seat. Create a checklist of everything you’ll need for the length of your trip before packing. Pack only what you’ll need while traveling. If you are breastfeeding, remember that you may not always have a private place for your baby to eat.

Be sure you’re appropriately plan to feed your baby during flight, which may include an adequate number of prepared bottles or nursing supplies and breastfeeding cover to nurse in public. Don’t forget to pack a few extra diapers in case of delays, and plastic bags for used diapers and dirty clothes. If you can combine this diaper bag and your own carry-on needs, that’s even better. A few days before your flight, make sure that you can carry your bags and your baby comfortably. You’ll also want an easy way to move your baby quickly through a crowded airport, such as a stroller or baby carrier.

A compact, lightweight umbrella stroller is perfect for babies who are sitting up, while smaller babies will be more comfortable being worn in a baby carrier – ring slings, wrap carriers, and other cloth-style carriers not only work well for carrying your infant at your destination but can also be used in-flight to help reduce tiring of your arms while holding your baby on the plane.

Most infants are extremely resilient and won’t be upset by flying. Changes in temperature and pressure changes will likely be the biggest issues you’ll face in keeping your infant settled during flight. Be sure to dress your baby in layers and bring a couple of light-weight blankets so that you can add or remove layers as the temperature fluctuates. Remember, babies are generally comfortable in one layer more than adults. Pressure changes during flight can cause your infant to have ear pain. If this happens, offer your baby something to suck on. If he’ll breastfeed or take a bottle, that will probably provide the most relief. Otherwise, a pacifier can also help relieve the pressure. The best way to keep your baby comfortable, though, is to take cues from her. Every infant is different, and yours will let you know what he needs.

Most babies will need a bit of playtime while they’re traveling, so you’ll want to pack a few of your child’s favorite toys. Stuffed animals and favorite blankets are great, as they are easy to pack and carry the comforting smell of home. Teething rings are great to sooth your baby in-flight, particularly if your child is teething during your travels. Be careful not to pack too many toys, however. Five or six toys are plenty to keep your baby happy.
While it is important to consider your baby’s needs, don’t forget to take care of yourself, too. Try to get plenty of rest and be sure to stay hydrated, especially if you are breastfeeding. Infants are very receptive to how their parents are feeling. Staying positive and as stress-free as possible will create a good energy that your baby will pick up on. If you are feeling good, you will be better prepared to take care of your baby and enjoy your trip with her.

UK to Venice

Apr-29-2009 By Tom Martens

Venice, Italy has its main terminal at the Marco Polo International Airport. A secondary airport, the Venice Treviso Airport, is used by budget airlines and charter carriers. The two airports both offer flights to all major cities in the United Kingdom, giving travelers many options when planning a trip.

Venice is located in northeastern Italy and is famous for its canals and gondolas. Another famous landmark in the city surrounded by water is the Bridge of Sighs. According to legend, the bridge grants eternal love to any couple that kisses beneath its arches as the sun goes down.

Visitors should keep in mind that untreated sewage released directly into the canals can leave Venice with an odor during the height of summer, which tends to be very warm. Locals recommend visiting in the spring or the fall as those are the milder and more pleasant seasons.

The city of Venice rests on an archipelago of 118 islands formed by about 150 canals dug in a shallow lagoon. The islands are interconnected by approximately 400 bridges. In the old city center, the canals function as roads, and the only way to travel is by boat or on foot. Venice’s rail station was built in the 1800’s, and an auto causeway and parking lot were added a century later. These modern transportation utilities have been placed on land at the northern edges of the city. Venice is Europe’s largest car-free zone, adding to its charm. Water travel is available?and quite expensive?by gondola, although most tourists use the more economical water bus taxis.

St. Mark?s Square is a big tourist attraction. Among its treasures are the Basilica and the Doge?s Palace. Legend has it that Casanova tunneled from the Palace to freedom. Venice is also well known for its Renaissance art, with the Tintoretto and Titian frescoes in the Palace and the treasures of the Santa Maria dei Frari church.

The annual Carnival of Venice has been celebrated since 1268. Beginning about two weeks before Ash Wednesday, the celebration ends with the strike of midnight on Fat Tuesday. Mussolini banned the carnival in the 1930’s and it was only revived in the 1980’s. Masks are always a big part of the Carnival of Venice. Carnival masks may cover just the eyes or the entire face.

The Venice Film Festival is the oldest film festival in the world and one of its most prestigious. Founded in 1932, the festival takes place in late August or early September in the historic Palazzo del Cinema on the Lungomare Marconi.

The cuisine of Venice is simple and known for its use of flavorful, local ingredients, such as olive oil, vegetables, fruits, wine and cheese. Cured meats like salami and prosciutto are also popular.

If you plan carefully and bring waterproof shoes, you will find a trip to Venice is worth your time and effort. There is a reason many consider Venice the most beautiful city in the world. Book your trip and find out why.

The no-frills airline, launched by Southwest in the 80s, is no longer a U.S. phenomena. Low cost airlines are popping up around the globe. They are taking over domestic and international flights throughout Europe and Asia and select routes in Africa, South America, and the Middle East. A few even operate international flights. And many are profitable.

Yet there is a flip side to cheap tickets. Travelers can spend a good amount of their time scouring the web for the best deal. Not all countries have a low cost airline and not all airports are serviced by a discount carrier.

Many low-fare airlines cannot be booked through on-line agencies or portals, such as Orbitz and Yapta. Promotional offers are usually limited and expire on a daily if not hourly basis.

And when you finally find a flight, it is difficult to compare the offering. The following airfare tips will reduce your search time and help prepare you for any additional travel time.

Research

  • Determine which carriers service the route you wish to fly. Most airport web sites include route maps as well as a list of airlines. Alternatives will only become apparent if you check the web site of both airports, arrival and departure.
  • If you are traveling abroad, identify local on-line agencies and portals of discount airfares.
  • Low cost flights often make use of secondary airports. Verify distance and ground transportation before you book. Most low-fare carriers and many consolidators provide such information on their web sites.
  • Many low-fare carriers offer point-to-point service. You may not be able to check-in for a second flight at a transit desk. So you may need to build-in some time between flights to accommodate any passport formalities, get your luggage and check-in for the next part of your trip.
  • Security precautions introduced by the credit card companies may limit your ability to book flights on foreign websites.

Getting the Best Deal On Airfare

  • Initiate your search with on-line agencies and consolidators.
  • Subscribe to the airline and to the consolidator’s newsletter.
  • Utilize services that enable you to set a price, such as the Orbitz “Deal Detector”. Orbitz will send an email if fares on the route you select drop to the price level you set. They provide the service for free.
  • Use the consolidator as a tool. Book directly with the airline. This may reduce the service charge without affecting the fare.

Comparing Fares

  • Low cost fares are often quoted on a one-way basis.
  • Taxes, surcharges, and handling fees are not always included in the original price. Click through to the final page to effectively compare cost.
  • Airfare may be quoted in the airline or portal’s local currency only. Converting airfares to USD will facilitate comparison.

Before You Depart

  • Pack a lunch or a snack and drinks for all. Food and beverage are no longer included in the price of the airfare!
  • Go to the airport early if you want to sit next to your spouse or your kids. Seating is likely to be open and boarding is often based on the order in which passengers check-in.

Parking at O’Hare Airport can be a big pain in the butt. What I have learned from many past experiences is leave the driving into the airport for someone else. Since I don’t live close to O’Hare Airport, I learned to use what is known as the park sleep fly hotel.

The park and fly hotel usually offers parking up to 15 days and a free shuttle ride to and from the airport, not to mention a 1 night stay at the hotel with all the amenities included. With that in mind we will list the top 3 hotels near Chicago O’Hare Airport offering park n fly packages, with the lowest priced deals first for those on a budget. These deals often cost less than the price of airport parking alone.

The Ramada at O’Hare Airport is about 6 miles from the airport and offers a park sleep fly package starting at just $89 for up to 4 people and 14 days parking. This has to be one of the best deals in the country. Often costing less than parking at O’Hare alone, and you get to stay at the hotel for 1 night before your trip. Definitely a good deal for the money, even if you don’t stay the night.

The LaQuinta Inn near Chicago O’Hare Airport has the next best deal at only $95 for 2 people and up to 14 days parking. They have their airport shuttles running every hour, and are located just 7 miles from the airport. Not being next to the airport can be a blessing if you’re a light sleeper, no airplanes flying over. Conveniently located in Elk Grove Village just north of O’Hare, this is a nice hotel and you will get a good nights sleep knowing you are getting a better deal than airport parking alone.

The Radisson Hotel O’Hare is for anyone who wants to be closer to the airport. Located just 2 miles from O’Hare, this park and fly package deal will only set you back about $119 for 7 days parking, with free shuttles running every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day. This is a top rated hotel parking package for the price, and close to the O’hare airport. Other hotels this close to the airport will cost almost twice as much as this deal.

So as you can see, staying at one of these park sleep fly hotels is completely within reason, especially if you have to park at O’Hare airport. Often costing less than airport parking alone, these could fit right into your travel budget, and maybe even save you some time and money in the long run.

Traffic, suitcases, checking your watch to see if you’ll make it in time are some of the things that make air travel so difficult.  Early morning flights may save you money in airline tickets sometimes, but it can be a nightmare to get there in time for check-in. So I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice to stay at a hotel close to the airport the night before and not have to travel so far to get there early in the morning?

What about all that luggage? You’re off to vacation for a week and your wife has packed everything you need for your stay. Parking and worrying about getting to and from your car with all that luggage can put a damper on your travel and ruin the very reason for a vacation getaway.

By taking all the stress out of traveling, I arrive in a better frame of mind. Using a Park Stay Fly Hotel w/FREE shuttle service, I get assistance with my luggage, and I can travel without the stress of wondering if where my car is parked is safe.

It’s nice to be close to the airport the night before my flight. Usually, park sleep fly packages are available near the airport with a 1 night stay and 14 days parking, which allows me to pay less than airport parking alone. With a park sleep and fly package, I just check-in usually before my flight, unless my return flight is at some weird hour in the morning, then I stay the night after my flight.

I try to take the stress out air travel, just leave the details to the pros.  You can check the parking fees ahead of time and see the deals available. It couldn’t be easier. No more waiting around for someone to pick you up while you drag your luggage around.

So I wound up staying the night at the Ramada Phila Airport, they had a secured longterm parking lot separate from the normal hotel parking, and they really took care of getting me to the airport on time. The driver was friendly and courteous, and helped me with my bags, and I got a good night’s sleep to boot. :)
